Starting 21 Aug 06, the XXXX Gold "Reef to Races" Variety Bash 2006 kicked off from Cairns and traced a route around Western Qld to end up in Birdsville just in time for the races. What a coincidence!!
Four of us blokes decided we wanted to be part of the mayhem so we decided to build a car that would take us along with the other Bashers.
The criteria was that we first had to raise a minimum of $7,000 to give to Variety for the special kids of Qld. We achieved that but at the same time, we had to build a car that was acceptable. It had to be at least 30 years old, be two wheel drive and have no go-fasty gear on it. We have done that as well. We’ve transformed a 1966 H.R. Holden into a one off Bash car!
During any Bash, Variety makes donations of equipment and facilities to many local communities. We, as bash participants pay for all our own accommodation, meals, etc and Bash organisers use local communities input wherever possible to provide the catering for Bash participants thereby helping them to raise funds for children in the area. Variety funds are used to purchase equipment, facilities or tangible items which directly benefit the recpient. In the past 12 months Variety Queensland has’
1. Purchased and donated 10 specially modified Sunshine Coaches,
2. Purchased over 100 communication devices, computers and wheelchairs for individuals and organisations,
3. Shouted 5000 disabled or disadvantaged children to a day out at the movies,
4. Hosted a series of Xmas parties for more that 5000 children across Queensland,
5. Installed 5 Liberty Wheelchair swings,
6. Organised and conducted many other outings for disadvantaged children.
Now, don’t you reckon they are good reasons for going on the Bash?
